Canada Trip 2009

Posted in Uncategorized on June 30th, 2008

So. In the Summer of 2009 I’m planning my independant trip to Canada just before I start the 3 long and arduous years of University.
The only thing I know that I want to do, is a bike trip across a few provinces in the space of 4-6 weeks. Now, I’ve read about alot of people and charities taking 3 months to travel from places like Vancouver to Newfoundland, or from Alaska to PEI. I don’t particularly have the time, confidence or funding to do anything that long. Especially on my own.
I know of a local charity group which would possibly enable some funding for me to do so and quite possibly - some companionship along the way, but all in all, I just want to do this for me.
Now, I know I’m going to begin in Vancouver and work my way east, and if I cycled 80 miles a day, it’ll take me 30 days to travel the 2400 miles from Vancouver to Toronto, with an extra few days here and there to just take a break. But it’s scary on your own.
After university I know that a 5 month road trip is planned for me which will begin in Vancouver and end in PEI and mainly cruising along the TCH (trans canada highway).
I’ve got my visa already sorted. I’ve got a partime job to build up funds. I’ve got my passport renewal sorted. I’m bummed at the fact you can’t hire a car at the age of 18. I know of two ways i’d like to travel around Canada. But i’m unsure as to what I actually want to do first, or what I will actually be doing at the time? Will I stay in one spot, will I be on tour or will I be on a bike.
Decisions, decisions.
All I DO know at this stage. Is that in July 2009. I’ll be in Canada. I cannot wait.

Sichuan Earthquake: Natural Phenomenon or Unnatural Consequence?

Posted in Blog on May 31st, 2008

After watching the late news last night, I heard that Sharon Stone has got herself into a controversy about her foot-in-mouth ordeal due to her opinion of the true nature behind the Sichuan Earthquake which happened on May 12 2008. She said; “I’m not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don’t think anyone should be unkind to anyone else. And the earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you’re not nice that bad things happen to you.”.

Now, after hearing the news of the earthquake and the devastation it caused, my mother and I began discussing how the majority of the 60K+ death toll was dominated by children. She then entertained that age-old idea of ‘What goes around, comes around’.

After China introduced the ‘One Child Policy’ in 1979 to elude the growing consquences that the population would impose upon the social and economic future of the country, thousands of children were left to die, but the majority of the children who were abandoned, aborted or killed, were girls.  Now, hundreds and thousands of parents are left destraught and childless.

My mother asked, could it be that this is ‘karma’? Could the real cause of this devastation be the effect of previous causes? Or is this merely a natural phenomenon and it’s absurd to think otherwise?

Although, to answer that question, you have to ask yourself: Do you believe in ‘Karma’? What do you believe in?
